A poem about housing in North America.
A poem about housing in North America.
Is it too extreme?
a needless alarm—
To question the houses
that keep us from harm?
Is it too extreme?
a needless alarm—
To question the houses
that keep us from harm?
What is a home?
Shelter, a harbor,
A space where we linger,
and storms grow softer.
What is a home?
Shelter, a harbor,
A space where we linger,
and storms grow softer.
How did it begin?
Trees in abundance—
Planks rose to walls;
we built with redundance.
How did it begin?
Trees in abundance—
Planks rose to walls;
we built with redundance.
But what of the downsides?
Time tightens its grip;
The upkeep endless,
each cost a slow drip.
But what of the downsides?
Time tightens its grip;
The upkeep endless,
each cost a slow drip.
Insects carve paths
where the beams should stay;
Mold creeps unseen,
stealing breath away.
Insects carve paths
where the beams should stay;
Mold creeps unseen,
stealing breath away.
Fires leap quickly;
a spark becomes flame.
Tornados erase—
leave a house without name.
Fires leap quickly;
a spark becomes flame.
Tornados erase—
leave a house without name.
Why not change?
The system resists.
Contractors cling
to their practiced lists.
Why not change?
The system resists.
Contractors cling
to their practiced lists.
Codes hold firm
to the known, the steady.
Insurers shy
from what's not already.
Codes hold firm
to the known, the steady.
Insurers shy
from what's not already.
Banks echo, 'No'—
with no fail-safe in sight,
And dreams of new methods
dissolve in the night.
Banks echo, 'No'—
with no fail-safe in sight,
And dreams of new methods
dissolve in the night.
Yet progress sitrs.
With vision clear,
Some challenge norms
and push through fear.
Yet progress stirs.
With vision clear,
Some challenge norms
and push through fear.
Imagine homes
that endure the storm,
That shelter and shield,
beyond the norm.
Imagine homes
that endure the storm,
That shelter and shield,
beyond the norm.
Will you join?
Rise with courage to the ascent?
Oh, the homes we can build,
when we think different.
Will you join?
Rise with courage to the ascent?
Oh, the homes we can build,
when we think different.
